| Auditioning for ScatterTones: how to join us |

Date/Time initial auditions will be held: Click here for a map to the audition room! To schedule an audition, sign up now at the sign up page, look for the ScatterTones table at the Welcome Week fairs, or on bruin walk during 0 and 1st week. If you can't make it to the table or can't make a solid time, feel free to drop in during the blocks of time listed, but be prepared to wait for an opening. Details: So what do you need to do for us? Our audition process is two-fold, with an initial audition as well as callbacks. For the initial audition, a small panel made up of the Directors, Business Manager, and a few other people will ask you to sing some scales and intervals , both up and down. This will let you warm up and let us hear your range. We'll then ask you to give us a one-minute solo of your choice, where you can rock out all you want. We may ask you to do one more exercise after your solo, to make sure we have a good idea of what you can do. This exercise is known as tonal memory, where we play a series of five random notes on the keyboard, and you sing the notes back to us. If you are called back, you'll be joined by the rest of the group, as well as everyone else we've called back. We'll then pretty much go through a mock rehearsal, learning music, and then have you sing in small groups with current members and/or other auditionees. If you are a vocal percussionist (beat boxer), this is also your time to show us your stuff. Then, after a really long night (or two, or three, but no more than four, and we mean REALLY long nights.for us, not you), we'll let you know if you're joining us for a year of hard work, great music, and insanity. Audition Tips Project! We can't call you back if we can't hear you because you were singing too softly. Besides, we sometimes perform without mics outdoors, so making sure you can be heard is important. Don't be afraid of making little mistakes (especially during callbacks) either. You should hear us when we try to learn a new song. Don't blow through the scales. We're listening closely to your intervals, your ability to move between notes, and your voice. And if you get a good warm up out of this, all the better for you. Choose a solo song that fits YOU. Make sure it's in your range so you'll sound great on it. Add personality into it. Have fun. This is your chance to really show us what you're made of. Whether it's a hard and fast alterna-rock song, a mellow ballad, or a jazzy riff, make sure your personality comes through. While we don't require that you sing a specific song, it'll help us more if you sing a song we know, so we're not left second-guessing whether you sang it well or not. If you sing something we don't know, we may ask you to sing a song determined by us. And avoid opera, country, and rap. We're a rock/pop group, so showing us that you can outrap Eminem or hit those high A's better than Sarah Brightman gives us no clue if you can rock out on Evanescence or croon out Ben Folds. Listen very, very closely on tonal memory. We're listening for those exact same notes, not just the intervals between. Take your time and THINK about the notes. We play the sequence twice, so you should be able to get it in your head. Above all, and especially during callbacks, BE YOURSELF! We look as much for personality as we do for talent. Relax and have fun. Tenseness doesn't lend itself to great singing. Please also check out the Audition FAQ page for more info.
